Wool breathes. It regulates temperature across a wider range than any other suiting fiber — warm when you need it, cool when you don't. It recovers from creasing naturally and holds dye with exceptional fidelity. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet, compared to cotton's 8%. For business suits, worsted wool in the Super 100s to 130s range covers the vast majority of professional wear worldwide.
The Super Numbers System Explained
The Super number measures wool fiber fineness in microns — the higher the number, the finer and softer the fiber, though also more delicate. Super 100s is about 18.5 microns, Super 120s about 17.5, and Super 150s about 16.5. Here's the thing — higher isn't always the winner. Ultra-fine can wrinkle or wear down quick, so they're best for special occasions. Super 100s or 120s strike a nice balance of soft and sturdy for everyday wear. Super 140s and up bring that luxury drape for formal or occasional pieces.
Fabric Weight and Season
Fabric weight, measured in grams per square meter (GSM), determines seasonality. Lighter cloth (200-250 GSM) suits spring and summer, mid-weight (250-300 GSM) is the year-round standard, and heavier (300-400 GSM) is for autumn and winter. For a suit worn often, a mid-weight worsted of roughly 270-310 grams is the most versatile choice.
Wool Blends: Adding Performance
